GLITZY AND GLAM BOOTHS AT BANGKOK GEMS AND JEWELRY FAIR'S GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY

Bangkok is famous for pussies, pink or otherwise!

THIS YEAR, I ATTENDED THE GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY OF THE ACCLAIMED BANGKOK GEMS AND JEWELRY FAIR WHICH CELEBRATED ITS 50TH BIRTHDAY! MUCH OLDER THAN MOST OF THE JEWELLERS, SOME OF WHOM HAVE INVESTED HEAVILY IN EXTRAVAGANT, ELABORATE AND EXPENSIVE BOOTHS UP TO 3,000 SQ FT EACH WHICH IS BIGGER THAN MOST CONDOS!

The Bangkok Gems and Jewelry Fair (13 to 17 September 2012) really puts the Malaysian versions to shame! I always attend the Malaysia Jewellery Fair held twice a year by 2 different organisers and they are just normal affairs compared to the twice yearly Bangkok Gems and Jewelry Fair which makes ours look like their poor cousin from the boondocks!

The Malaysian jewellery fairs offer simple, straightforward and no-nonsense booths with simple, straightforward and no-nonsense, glass showcases. Maybe 1 or 2 stalls will have a vase of flowers or potted plant!

In comparison, the booths at Bangkok Gems and Jewelry Fair flaunt imaginatively conceived and executed pavilions filled with blooms, pools of lotuses, flowering trellises, sculptures, huge artworks and designer details from a pink pussy sitting on the roof to 3-D imageries to proper display showcases found in permanent shops!

While we all love to oogle and drool and fantasize about magnificent jewels that glitter like the sun and moon combined, just as important are the machines, equipment and technology that allow the bling to be made! The Bangkok Gems and Jewelry Fair has a large section devoted only to the latest hightech machines for factory owners and manufacturers.

Just look and admire the Thai tenacity and penchant for the artistic, dramatic and show-worthy!
